THE DAUGHTER [FEATURE FILM]

SOUND EFFECTS EDITING

SOUND DESIGN

ABOUT:

In this gripping suspense-thriller, the daughter of a wealthy mayoral candidate and her friends are held for ransom by a group of daring criminals. Soon, as tempers flare and tension mounts, secrets rise to the surface revealing that these kidnappers are after much more than money.

I edited the sound effects and foley for this feature film.  This was quite a fun project for sound.  It featured several chases and gunfights so adding the sound effects was great.  Working with director Jonathan Levine was great and together we were able to use sound and picture to tell this suspenseful thriller.

The Daughter officially premiered at the Houston Worldfest Film Festival where it took awards for "Best Thriller" and "Best Actress" and was nominated for "Best Picture" overall.  The daughter will have its WestCoast debut at the Idyllwild Film Festival in Jaunayy 2014.

SIEMENS /answers MAGAZINE [SHORT FILM]

LOCATION SOUND RECORDING

SOUND DESIGN

ABOUT:

"/answers" is a campaign sponsored by Siemens to tell real life stories of people that benefitted, directly or indirectly, from various Siemens projects.  The company funds "up and coming" film makers to find and produce short documentary films about these stories.

I produced, recorded and edited sound and music with FlyEye Media on two of these films:

"The Last Flower"

The story of an orchid farmer and his family in Guangdong, China.  For years the farmer has struggled with the potential loss of the crop do to the frequent power outages in the region.  With the addition of Siemens HVDC line, the region has suffered from much fewer power outages thus strengthening the farmers crop yield.

The music for this film was composed to accentuate the; Struggles, emotion and triumph of the family in this crucial time.

"Ingredients"

The story of a "Mixologist" in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  Jaders was able to overcome the trials and tribulations throughout his life, pull himself up and become one of the best Bartender/mixoligisits in the world.  He's been internationally recognized for his skills and I can say first hand that his drinks are AMAZING!

I used several sounds recorded on location in San Juan to enhance the scene in this story.  From recording the surf from underwater to chasing pigeons, you'll hear an interesting mix of sounds in this film.

The score was composed and produced in collaboration with The Odd Trio in Athens, Georgia.  This music is built on the "5 tones" of a wind chime.  You'll hear the chimes in the start and finish of the film.  We then used these tones as a foundation for the rest of the music.  The style ranges from Latin to Avant-Garde and adds a unique sound to the film.

ABOUT:

Shanghai, last night.  A pajama clad pensioner walks into a desolate Shanghai noodle bar, curlers in hair, smart phone in hand.  14 minutes later over 100,000 people have blood on their hands – social justice or social network gone too far?  Nighthawks looks at the powerful effect the Internet has on Chinese sub-culture. It asks how far its reach amongst the young and old, the rich and poor and guilty or innocents can go before it really needs to be tamed… Inspired by true events which have never been more topical, Nighthawks is director Lupori's fourth short film and his most socially daring yet. Shot in Mandarin Chinese and the local Shanghainese dialect, his film goes closer to the  raw China that few ever get to see and yet fewer would dare to show.

took on virtually all aspects of the sound for this film.  The location recording for the principal photography was done by Cloud Wang and his team.  I was the mixer for the pick-ups.  As usual, Cloud did an excellent job with the production dialog recording but the location itself was problematic.  As it was shot next to a busy road it was quite a challenge to get it to sound like "the last place on earth".  After more then 100 hours in the studio and nearly 1000 sound/foley effects I think we got there.  From the creeks in the chairs to the blood on the floor, nearly all the sound effects were uniquely recorded for this film in order to build the scene.

I worked closely with Director, Gianpaolo Lupori to create a score that was subtle but dynamic.  The sound of the score is used to shape the emotion of the scene as it plays out while remaining in the shadows.  The sounds of traditional Chinese instruments and even a Saxophone were recorded and processed to achieve this unique sound.  For the End Credits I built a track off of the familiar sound of mobile phone interference.  This rhythmic sound was recorded and the sampled throughout the piece.  The Score was composed with inspiration by Trent Reznor,  Atticus Ross and Clint Mansell to name a few.

WING-CHUN DEMONSTRATION VIDEO [VIRAL-VIDEO]

SOUND EFFECTS EDITING

SCORE COMPOSITION

ABOUT:

This video was shot by Director/Photographer Erik Martens.  It's purpose is to demonstrate the art of Wing-Chun in a fictional fight scenario.  The master is able to overcome several skilled and armed henchmen using his training.  The individual moves are shown as "flashbacks" so the audience can see how the training can be used in a "real world" situation.

There was no sound recorded on location so all the sound effects were added and synced in post production.  For this film I added around 200 individual sound effects to the contact and movement points during the fight.  These sound effects work to ad dynamic and strength to the scene.

The Score was composed with influences from The Matrix and 007 to bring energy to the scene while portraying the Master as "Agent" or "savior" in the scenario.
